Legendary actor Al Pacino had a checked past.

His parents divorced when he was only two years old and his father moved to California. Al and his mother moved in with her parents in the Bronx and Al developed a close relationship with his grandfather, James Gelardi – who was a native of (can you believe it?): Corleone, Sicily!

Anyway, Al dropped out of school when he was 17, began smoking at nine and drinking and casual marijuana use by the time he was 13. (He claims to have never used hard drugs and two his closest friends died from drug abuse of the ages of 19 and 30.)

Growing up in the Bronx, Al got into occasional fights and was considered something of a troublemaker in school.

Then 21 years old, Alphonse Pacino, was arrested in January, 1961 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

He was one of three men in a car wearing black masks and gloves, spotted by police officers who said they were suspiciously circling the block. The cops found a loaded .38 caliber pistol in the car's trunk. Arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, none of the three could pay the $2000 bail and went to jail, where Pacino spent three days.

But the arresting officer said Pacino was very helpful during the police interviews, explaining that the trio was on their way to an acting job and needed the gun as a prop.

The charges were later dropped.

Al had more personal challenges the next year when his mother died at age 43 and his grandfather died the following year.

However, his great acting talent carried him to stardom in Hollywood and he excelled in a wide range of roles, winning Golden Globe Awards for "Serpico", "Angels in America" and "You Don't Know Jack"
