The arrest of Tupac Shakur:

The name on his birth certificate was Lesane Parish Crooks. Born in East Harlem in New York City to a couple of active members of the Black Panther Party in 1971, Tupac Shakur gained fame as a Hip Hop rapper, actor, poet and activist.

He had several scrapes with the law, including a 1991 lawsuit that he filed against the Oakland Police Department, charging that officers brutally beat him for jaywalking. Much of his $43,000 settlement went to his lawyer.

In April 1993, Shakur was charged with one count of felony assault, accused of trying to hit another rapper with a baseball bat at a concert at Michigan State University. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, and two thirds of his thirty day jail sentence was suspended. He was ordered to perform 35 hours of community service.

And although all charges were later dropped, he was involved in a shooting in Atlanta with two brothers and off-duty police officers of October 1993.

There were other cases too, but the biggest occurred in November 1993, when Tupac and others were charged with sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room.

He denied it, saying they had prior relations consensual earlier in the day – which the woman admitted. She claimed sexual assault during a second visit, charging that Shakur and his entourage raped her.

Despite protestations of his innocence, he was convicted of first-degree sexual abuses and sentenced to one and a half to 4 1/2 years in prison, for an "act of brutal violence against a helpless woman", according to the judge.

Shakur was released on bail pending an appeal, but when he could no longer raise his bail money, he served eleven months of the prison sentence at New York's Clinton Correctional Facility starting in February, 1995.

By April, 1996, he drew another 120 days in jail for violating the terms of his bail release.

On the night of September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur encountered his biggest and final problem, when he was shot to death…
