The arrest of Ray Lewis:
Tough and strong…
…Ray Lewis was a star linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, spending his entire 17 year NFL career with the team until his retirement in 2013.
He was considered one of the best Middle Linebackers ever…
…named to 13 Pro Bowls, winner of the league's Most Valuable Player Award and a member of two Super Bowl winning teams.
However, major trouble came after a Super Bowl XXXIV party in Atlanta in January 2000. A fight broke out between Lewis and his friends and another group of people. Two in the other group were stabbed to death.
Lewis and companions Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, were indicted on murder and aggravated assault charges.
But two weeks into the trial, the charges against Lewis were dropped in exchange for his testimony against his two co-defendants. Ray got off with a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice, because he initially told police he wasn't at the scene. Lewis was sentenced to 12 months' probation and fined a quarter of a million dollars by the NFL.
In a post script, his two co-defendants Oakley and Sweeting were acquitted of the murder rap and no other suspects were ever arrested for the crimes.
And the following year, not missing a career beat, Ray Lewis was named MVP of the following Super Bowl XXXV.
