The arrest of Mel Gibson:
An action hero with matinee idol looks, Mel Gibson sparkled on the movie screen in a wide range of roles.
His most famous effort, 1995's Braveheart…
…which he produced, directed and starred in. The film won him an Academy Award for Best Director.
He grew up in New York State, but his family relocated to Sydney, Australia when his father won a $145,000 workplace related injury settlement. Mel's acting career began in Australia and he caught Hollywood's attention in the 1979 film "Mad Max"
Moving to the U.S. he starred in the "Lethal Weapon" series, along with "Ransom", "Conspiracy Theory" and others.
He also produced and directed the controversial "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004.
His 26 year marriage to his wife Robyn ended with a separation in July 2006…
…and it was followed with a drunken driving arrest in Malibu, California.
There was a domestic violence investigation in 2010 after he split with Oksana Grigorieva…
…with whom he had a daughter, Lucia.
And things really got dicey for him when civil rights activists called for a boycott of his films, accusing him of racism, sexism and anti-Semitism. A series of telephone rants were made public, hurting his image further.
In March 2011 he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge and settled with Grigorieva for $750,000, joint legal custody of their daughter and a house in Sherman Oaks, California.
