He's a famous rapper and record producer and businessman, one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists in the world with an estimated net worth of half a billion dollars, according to "Forbes" magazine.
Jay Z's sold more than 75 million records and has won 17 Grammy Awards
He owns the 40/40 Club and the Rocawear clothing line …
…and is married to a super-star wife, Beyoncé…
…with whom he's had a daughter Blue Ivy Carter.
Born Shawn Corey Carter, he's come a long way from his childhood at the Marcy Houses project in Brooklyn's Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood. He never graduated high school and some of songs refer to selling crack cocaine.
His professional name's an outgrowth of his nickname as a kid: "Jazzy"
Despite his success and fame, he's had some legal problems, including a guilty plea to a stabbing charge in 1999. He was indicted in January 2000 for allegedly stabbing a record executive during a nightclub brawl and pleaded guilty. Also, there was an illegal gun possession charge near a New York nightclub in 2001. That charge was dropped.
He's grown though those problems and has even become involved in philanthropic activity, using a world tour to help fight global water shortages.
But there may be trouble in paradise.
Beyoncé's sister Solange assaulted Jay Z in an elevator in 2014 and the fight was captured on surveillance video while his wife watched.

Various media reports say the power couple may be heading for a divorce after their current tour and they have vainly tried to keep their break-up plans under wraps so they can finish up this year's joint money making venture.
